Ranneko Plays Dumb Mistakes – Channel Update 2017-03-16

I made an embarrassing mistake this week, the original upload for my Heat Signature Hot Tip was just the 6 second animated title screen and nothing else. I have made that mistake a disappointingly high number of times, but I usually catch it before the video goes live. There are a fair number of warning signs along the way. The video exports much faster from my editor, the file uploads faster, the automatically generated thumbnails are all of the intro rather than being spread through the intended footage, but this time I missed all the signs.

Obviously that mistake was unfortunate, but one thing I find reassuring about it was the comments I received that were either teasing or confused about the unusual video. Had I made the same mistake a couple of years ago I would have heard nothing, heck had this happened with one of my Let’s Play series today I doubt I would have had anyone ask. It is a reassuring signal that people are watching and are interested.

The last week’s releases were:

Ranneko Plays – 2017 YouTube Analytics Review

2017 has been over for quite a while now, so how did Ranneko Plays do? YouTube provides analytics to creators to give them a sense of what is popular on their channel, what demographics they appeal to, how long people are watching, etc. In theory, this should allow me to get meaningful information about my channel and help me find ways to improve my videos and grow my channel.

What did I release in 2017?

YouTube makes this information surprisingly difficult to collect, which means no pretty graphs, just text for this one.

During 2017, I published 334 videos, 331 of them following a fixed schedule, and 3 extras near the end of the year.

At the start of the year I released videos every Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. On April 10th I shifted to a daily release schedule and I am extremely pleased to have not missed a single update during that time even with an extensive travel schedule. It seemed that I was always building up and running down the buffer in response to an upcoming trip or time away during 2017.

During that time, I covered:

That is a total of 17 different games, 15 if you exclude DLC and game jams games

On April 10th 2017, Ranneko Plays started to release videos every single day. I am quite proud of the fact I have not missed a single day since, but was it worth it?

Not really, but let’s quantify, using graphs!

Ranneko Plays Returns to Heat Signature – Channel Update 2018-02-23

I’ve been back in Sweden long enough to start recording again, but I want to run through all of SteamWorld Dig 2 before I return to the old schedule. I both want to build up my buffer and change my recording schedule and model. These things unfortunately take time. In the meantime, if you are interested in being part of some of the recording, I am now streaming regularly. Every Tuesday evening from 6pm CET over on my twitch channel.

The first part of my schedule to return is Heat Signature, as you can see in the release summary below. There are 2 pretty simple reasons why:

  1. I still really enjoy playing the game. I am good at it and I enjoy trying new play styles in it for some reason.
  2. Heat Signature was updated last week, introducing 2 new items and going on sale. As a result way more people are looking up Heat Signature on Youtube right now.

Quite a jump

That sale has significantly boosted the number of eyeballs on my channel for now, both directly from YouTube searches and indirectly via my posts on the Heat Signature Subreddit. Things will inevitably return to normal, but in the meantime I am enjoying the boost to engagement. I am even getting comments right now!

Ranneko Plays SteamWorld Dig 2 – Channel Update 2017-02-16

YouTube Link

Having run through all of my pre-trip footage previously, this week was almost entirely footage captured while I was in Barcelona. I simply didn’t have the time to hold another recording session and return to anything resembling the old schedule. It is amazing how much trips can distort things because you need to cover not just the trip itself, but also through to the next recording timeslot.

As things stand I only have 1-2 times a week where I can record, so those slots are pretty precious plus I want to give this newer model of a single game running every day a slightly longer chance to help answer those questions from last week.

Pity it was still too cold to swim

Ranneko Plays in Barcelona – Channel Update 2018-01-26

I am working from Barcelona at the moment, leaving me with an odd mix of free time but low equipment. I have spent the evenings slowly editing the most of the footage I recorded before I flew out, and conveniently, my friend Syfro finished up editing the games we recorded back in Sydney. Between these two things I almost have enough to cover the gap, but it will mean some surprise changes of games.

The last week’s releases were:

Saturday: Pillars of Ranternity
Sunday: Heat Signature Challenge Runs
Monday, Wednesday, Friday: ShadowRan: Hong Kong
Tuesday: Heat Signature Hot Tips / Ranneko’s Tuesday Tips

Ranneko Plays Changes – Channel Update 2018-01-19

This week, YouTube announced changes to its partner program. In particular, they have decided to signficiantly raise the bar required for video monetisation. In order to qualify for their program you now need at least 1,000 subs, and 4,000 watch hours in the past 12 months. My channel is nowhere near these numbers. At the time of writing, I have 174 subscribers and about 1,500 watch hours.

When I received my first adsense payment last year, it felt like a huge milestone, but with these changes the next similar milestone seems to have been pushed back incredibly far.

This also came at a particularly bad time for me, I am going on a work trip for the next 3 weeks, and this news just killed my motivation to try to build the buffer enough to cover the trip. I will edit and post what I have, but the channel will probably either take a break during some of the next 3 weeks or at the least change games to ones I can record while I am away.

Long term, the channel itself hasn’t been what I would describe as “healthy” for quite some time now. I will go into greater detail when I finish my analytics post, but basically when it comes to my let’s plays. The numbers pretty much say no one cares, and daily uploads aren’t helping.

Currently my plans are to split my attention between my Twitch and my YouTube

On Twitch:

  • Steam regularly, starting at one night a week
  • Slowly upload the best of my old Let’s Play series

On YouTube:

  • Continue Ranneko’s Tuesday Tips, probably continuing to focus on Heat Signature until I finish working that out of my system
  • Post VODs of the twitch streams
  • Post stream highlights

These plans are of course subject to change, but I would love to hear feedback from anyone on this approach, and any worries or advice they may have.

Ranneko Plays Realtime Heat Signature – Channel Update 2017-12-29

Sorry for not posting last week, the lead up to Christmas had me a little too occupied to sit down and write this up.

If you have been watching the channel, you might have also noticed a few videos being published on Friday outside the normal schedule. These videos:

I have been somewhat obsessed with Heat Signature of late, for some reason it seems to have grabbed me harder than almost anyone else I know and as a result I have spent a lot of time looking at what other people have been saying about the game. In particular I noticed a number of people wishing there was the ability to show a replay of a mission without any of the pauses or slowdowns the game provides to make things a little more managable.

I realised that, as the owner of a video editor, I was in a position to effectively make that kind of a replay. It takes a lot of work, and it isn’t perfect, a few times single frames of pause screens pop in, but I have been able to take Heat Signature missions and create footage of them proceeding in real-time. It is amazing just how much information is either lost or obscured this way, you will see your character charge into a group of guards and they will all suddenly fall over, or you will literally just run through a room at breakneck speed, giving the guards no time to react as you steal a key and keep moving.

These videos have proved really popular, so I will probably make more of them, especially since I am, after all, still playing the game. The only problem is that they don’t fit into the normal schedule. Should I change the schedule? Is it okay to just occasionally release extra videos or do I risk having my channel be perceived as spammy? What do you think?

Ranneko Plays The Importance of Advertising – Channel Update 2017-10-27

My channel has been pretty stagnant of late. In a typical 48 hour period I average somewhere between 40 and 50 views, 0 comments and no new subscribers. I’m not sure what to do about this long term, but short term there are some very obvious actions that I am always somewhat hesitant to take.

The most obvious reason why I don’t get many views is that not many people know about my videos. If you don’t tell people they exist, they don’t find them. Strange right? Unfortunately, I get pretty nervous telling people about my videos, mostly worried that they will see it as spam or that the videos themselves aren’t good enough.

This week I built up the courage to post the Heat Signature tips on the Heat Signature subreddit and almost immediately saw results. My views immediately tripled and I got a few comments on the thread from people who learned things from the tips that I’ve already put out. It is a good reminder that telling people what you are working on actually works.

Is there anything cool you have been working on that you are nervous telling people about?

Ranneko Plays Rushing For The Finish – Channel Update 2017-10-20

I am not sure how widely I have discussed this, but most of the recording I do is also streamed up at https://twitch.tv/ranneko. There isn’t much in the way of audience interaction, and thus there generally isn’t much of an audience. The goal is to give me a backup in case I screw up with my local recording.

At the time of writing, I am actually very close to the end of the Ransistance and I am hoping to finish it off before I fly out (At the time of publishing I will already have started the first leg of my journey). I have been having a great time with War of the Chosen but I think it would be less fun if I not play it for a month and then have to get back into the flow right at the end of the game.

With the Chosen weaponry, the new hero classes, the new skill system and the near gear from the Alien Hunters DLC by the end of the game your soldiers are significantly more powerful than in the base game. I am finding the late game missions to be almost a cakewalk. I think if I play again I will try increasing the difficulty level and look at using mods built around upping the danger level.

Have any of you given War of the Chosen a shot for yourself?

Ranneko Plays Year on Year Improvement – Channel Update 2017-10-13

I have finally completed all of the recording I need to do before Australia. All I have left is a little bit of editing and uploading and I will have videos scheduled for every day until early December.

Last year I remember pulling off something similar, but at that time my release schedule was a little more relaxed, I think I was only doing 3-4 videos a week but it still took a lot of time and effort to build up the buffer enough to cover everything. This has been a similar amount of work despite the fact I am producing about twice as many videos.

I think the biggest difference, besides simple practice, is changes to the video editor I use. Last year exporting a video would take several hours and I would need to manually kick off the next in sequence. It was hard to speed things up, because ultimately I could export maybe 3 videos in an evening with long stretches of downtime (and leaving the app open overnight).

Nowadays, VideoPad has a queue system which means I can edit the next video while the first exports, but even more significantly, the export process itself is significantly faster because the developers have made the program work smarter. Previously every frame of the video would be re-encoded, regardless of the original source. Now, if I haven’t made a change in a large section of video, and the source is the same quality as the export, VideoPad will literally just copy the data. Where previously I could render a few videos a night, now I can render half a dozen or more.

Are there any apps you use regularly that have improved like that? Also if you edit videos yourself, what is your workflow?
